What I Learned Rebuilding 30+ Small Business Websites

After rebuilding more than thirty small business websites, a handful of patterns show up over and over — and they have almost nothing to do with visual design.

A pretty site and a converting site are different projects

Plenty of the sites I inherit look genuinely good. Most of them still weren't generating leads, because looking good and being persuasive are two separate skill sets.

The homepage carries too much weight

Owners often try to say everything on the homepage. The best-performing rebuilds instead use the homepage to filter visitors toward the specific page that answers their actual question.

Speed is a trust signal, not just a ranking factor

A slow site quietly tells visitors the business isn't well run, long before they read a word of copy. Speed fixes consistently pay for themselves.

Owners undersell their own experience

The strongest converting copy almost always comes from interviewing the business owner directly — the specific details they think are boring are usually exactly what builds trust with a stranger.

Maintenance isn't optional

Every site that regressed after launch did so because updates and monitoring stopped. A website is closer to a living system than a one-time deliverable.
